Appearance: are dark yellow or brown in color, like uric acid. They are seen as spherical bodies only or spherical bodies with radial or concentric striations, often with long prismatic spicules referred to as ”Thorny Apples”. They almost resemble small bugs.
These crystal are very rarely seen in a freshly voided urine specimen. Ammonium urates tends to precipitate as the urine stands or is stored.They are only abnormal in a freshly collected urine sample. May indicate certain metabolic or liver conditions, also linked to kidney stones.
